A LETTER TO THE ENTRANTS FROM MARY DONDERO:
"Dear Artists,
Submitting work to a judged competition is in hopes for gaining opportunities, or exposure. It is also an effort to find meaningful affirmation that can encourage the creative process. I want to thank all of you for submitting your work to “Regarding the Symbolic and Concerning the Real”.

I believe that all the entries are of quality in concept, technique or artistry. I was impressed with the variety of creative ideas, use of the photographic medium and what I see as the potential for these photographers/artists to continue creating distinctive work. I had hoped that the theme would encourage a broad rage of photographic styles and philosophical ideas or approaches, but I now realize this ultimately made my task more difficult.

I was pleased to see that some imagery was created by the use of signs and symbols, both traditional as well as invented personal semeiotic constructions. I enjoyed the fact that some imagery was clearly manipulated, either with digital tools, scissors, or chemical, exhausting the medium and pushing the boundary of what a still photo-like image can be in our complex contemporary culture. And of course, I can’t ignore the works that were beautiful. Beautiful because of the idea, manipulation of materials, or because the photographer holds an understanding of how to capture a straight shot, all bringing forth imagery that is rememberable.

I am appreciative to all of you for trusting my judgment and submitting work for my review. I’m honored to have been the curator for this exhibit as it has exposed me to inspired ideas, more artists, and this experience has allowed me to participate in public discourse."

Kind Regards
Mary Dondero
