SECOND PLACE

Shāna einhorn says, "These works, although from differing series share a common thread; they all speak to the universal archetype of the feminine - incorporating freedom, integration, reclamation and re-birth. The photos bring life into focus and record aspects of one’s essential nature.

I am a fine art photographer from Huntington, NY. My art is not about image, it's about essence and as such I think of my work as a spiritual photography.

The images explore one's connection to self, each other and the natural world, using mostly old manual cameras with black & white film and lately mobile photography.

I came to photography two years after a cancer diagnosis back in 2003 when a friend loaned me a camera. While struggling with questions regarding despair vs. life the camera became my lifeline. It soon became apparent that photography was to become my life's endeavor as a connection to the medium quickly deepened.

One can say that I used this new opportunity as a way to re-shape my world. My intention was to connect and make good pictures; not to theorize about them – that came much later. The constraints and ramifications of living with chronic illness inform much of my art, as themes of connection and isolation permeate much of the work.

Ultimately it is an inquiry about belonging and significance. My work has been in over 45 group exhibitions both juried and otherwise, and currently is in 3 private collections."

Shāna's fine art work has been exhibited across the U.S and Europe in galleries and print including The Center for Fine Art Photography, PhotoPlace Gallery, Lightbox Photographic Gallery, PH21 Gallery, Feature  Shoot, The Griffin Museum, The Curated Fridge and photoludica.

MY FAMILY by Sonja Stich
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Sonja Stich says, "I document our life as a family with a focus on the simple things.

Over the years, both in my private life and in my work, I have scraped off many layers of civilization. In order to live closer to the core of myself as a human being, basically, I've been eliminating more and more things from my life that used to be important to me. I gave up my work as a graphic designer because the focus on beautiful packaging repelled me more and more. As a family, we moved from the city to a village to be closer to nature. If, someday, my children should forget that they are part of the whole, that humans are not separate from nature and other humans, how beneficial real laughter and heartfelt touches are, how little you need to be happy, my photos hopefully will remind them.

As a photographer I work with basic equipment, natural light and I don’t influence the scene. I try to eliminate everything that is not essential to the specific moment.

After studying art history and design I worked as a graphic designer in Germany, my country of origin.

In 2011 my family and I moved to Spain where I learned photography. I have been working on a project for several years documenting the immersion of my children into nature and their connection to places, friends and family. Recently I started a new series about an alternative education project in Catalonia.

Above all, my interest lies in capturing people connecting with each other and with their environment.

My photos have been published i.a. in Shots Magazine, Photography Monthly, Huffington Post and Click Magazine."

EXPECT A MIRACLE by Stephen Mimms
THIRD PLACE
(Click on image for larger view)

Stephen Mimms says, "I am motivated to produce photographic images that please me and arouse emotions with their beauty.  I simply shoot to make art.  Most times, I strive to design images that reflect a unique point of view, showcasing various interests in travel, nature and architecture.

I enjoy photography with a passion.  That excitement has the ability to exploit what I see at the time.

I began with film photography for many years, learning through self-study, books, magazines and practice.  I discovered digital photography and my passion for photography has continued to develop.

The goal for each of my images is to make you stop, look and be moved to think and feel.  I want to create images that not only have a story to tell, but have depth and feeling and serve as reminders of the breadth of all of our emotions and senses."

WINDOW SHOPPING ON MARS #1 by Stuart Zalka
(Click on image for larger view)

Stuart Zalka says, 'Window Shopping On Mars', These photographs were inspired by a recent rereading of Ray Brad Bradbury’s sci-fi classic “The Martian Chronicles.”

So who were the Martians? They were us, but not us. Cultured and humanoid in appearance, they sometimes existed in more than one space-time and were known to shape shift under emotional duress. With imagination thus engaged, I began to spot them in the store front windows as I walked through the city and decided to capture their images using a digital pinhole camera. I came to feel like I was Window Shopping On Mars."

Stuart Zalka, born 1953, lives  in Brooklyn, NY since 1976, He's a serious amateur photographer since 1971.

CONDUCTOR 1 by Suzette Dushi
(Click on image for larger view)

Suzette Dushi says, "The photos I am submitting are part of a series titled "In Transit", where I photographed the New York City Subway system over a period of one year.

I was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1957 and moved to New York in 1980. I earned my BA in marketing from New York University and worked as a financial analyst in banking.

I started photographing with my first camera at the age of eleven, when as a family we took a trip through Europe. My passion was rekindled a few years ago traveling around France with my own family.

Most recently, I studied at the International Center of Photography with photographers Dina Litovsky, Natan Dvir, Anja Hitzenberger and Barbara Mensch.

Currently I am studying with Christopher Giglio. I am a street photographer and documentarian. I create images that are objective and realistic. My photographs have been exhibited at the Istanbul Biennial and in various juried group shows in Vermont, Texas, Rome, Budapest, Istanbul and New York. My photographs have been published in Pastiche Magazine.

DOUBLE DECKER by Terry Barczak
(Click on image for larger view)

Terry Barczak says, "I love to explore the world with my camera. Initially most of my work happened in the urban environment. I still consider myself a “street photographer”, though now I find photographs anywhere.

It is always a process of discovery, graced by possibility and good fortune.  My way of seeing tends towards the unexpected and the surreal in the ordinary and relies strongly on composition and enigmatic juxtaposition.

Often my pictures play with illusion, deception and imagination. I would like the viewer to see and experience the surprise and ambiguity of everyday life. Though completely “straight” and not manipulated in any way, they tend to question the reality of the scene they depict."

Terry Barczak is a Minneapolis based photographer who began her work as a street photographer in the late 70’s. Though cities still provide her with subject matter, Terry’s other projects look into landscape, abstraction, portraiture, and religion.

In addition to numerous exhibitions of her photographs, she has served as art director with filmmaker Shelli Ainsworth, taught photography at a variety of institutions and worked in the Art Department at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

DIRTY LOOK by Yvonne Muller
(Click on image for larger view)

Yvonne Muller says, "These are single photographs of and through the panes of our glass bus shelter. Between scratched windows and soft landscape they're ready-made montages.

These days, I usually montage diverse images (for now, posted only on Lens Culture). Here, the glass has done the work for me. It turns out, besides, that I'm taken by the sense of liminality I find here.

Voila, they've provided me with silence ,rhythm, tempo, harmony, immediacy and divergent/parallel vision. All in all, it's new opportunity for artistic ferment.

I've photographed and photoshopped since the year 2000. Before that, I was a painter. Recombination has informed my work from the beginning. There's just less freedom in the physical, tactile world than in the technological one. Photoshop lets me move parts and see through things in newly possible ways.

Back in 1988, I learned to make etchings from glass plates. Developing imagery on transparent stuff foreshadowed these photographs of glass. Separately, toward my final days in the painting studio, years after making the etchings, I turned to sanding down my otherwise finished and dry paint surface. It was a portent of things to come. That form of erasure brought energy to the unnaturally smooth surface. The work must always organize and articulate energy.

I showed regularly at the Tibor deNagy Gallery and nationally for a time.  Also, before turning to photography I had two solo painting shows at the Duke University Museum of Art.

I have made three dimensional paper and paint constructions, have made cinematographic stage effects (University of Arizona), have worked as a visiting artist, teaching painting and drawing (Duke University), as a fine art photographer and once as a dance costume designer.

Most recently, my montage work has been recognized by Steven Albahari, Publisher of 21st Editions and juror of the 2016 Clarence John Laughlin Award, by the Foley Gallery in NY with inclusion in 2017 in “Digital Versus Analog” and in 2018 with inclusion by Anastasia James in “Time Travelers” at the Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz, NY."
